You Could Live Like Royalty on an English Island as St. Michael's Mount's New Gardener

St. Michael's Mount, a wind-battered, rocky island off the coast of Cornwall, England, isn't the first place one might expect to find an exotic garden. But flourishing among the cliffs and bedrock of the island's castle are plants that would normally only be found in warmer climates. As Atlas Obscura reports, the site is currently seeking an expert horticulturalist to care for it all.

A walled garden was constructed on the castle grounds in 1780, and plant life has been maintained on the island ever since. The harsh terrain actually gives flora an advantage: Rocks absorb heat from the Sun during the day and release it at night, allowing plants like aeoniums, agave, and aloe to thrive.

In addition to having an extensive knowledge of plants, the castle's new gardener should possess physical stamina. The job description states that navigating the steep slopes "would challenge the most agile mountain goat" and that scaling the castle battlements "isn't for the faint-hearted." But for a passionate horticulturalist with lots of ambition and management experience, the job could be a perfect fit. It's also an opportunity to live like royalty on a secluded island: Whoever is hired for the role will be lodged in a Victorian terraced house with views of the medieval castle.
